Exo Gonia & Pyrgos: Two of the most traditional villages in Santorini
Exo Gonia is the perfect place in Santorini to enjoy leisurely walks and take in the traditional Theran vibes. Strolling along the scenic path, called 'calderimi' in Greek, will eventually lead you uphill where Nano Suites lie. When you еnter Exо Gοnia, the imposing church οf Agios Chаralambоs crowning the top of the hill will probably be the first thing you notice. Agios Charalampos is one of the largest churches on Santorini and is definitely nοt of the typical whitewashed and bluе-domed outline that one usually stumbles upon at other villages across the island.Next to Exo Gonia, lies Pyrgos, another traditional village that stands the test of time, retaining the romanticism and innocence of a time long past. Pyrgos is known as Pyrgos Kallistis, meaning "the most beautiful castle." Declared an EU protected settlement in 1995, Pyrgos is a typical fortified hamlet, and one of the five Venetian Castles that one can discover on Santorini, referred to as “Kastelia.”
In springtime, during the Greek Orthodox Easter, Pyrgos transforms into the most magical place in Santorini. On Holy Good Friday, as the funeral procession of the body of Jesus Christ, “Epitaph” in Greek, starts along the narrow streets, the entire village lights up by candles that are set ablaze along the hill and by the ones that people hold as they follow the ceremony in reverence. The atmosphere is truly phantasmagorical; it is a thrilling experience to watch the village glowing from afar, with flickering flames lightening up the night. On Holy Easter Sunday, at the village’s main square, an effigy is burnt by the locals, and there are also fireworks, lambs on spit rotisseries, fine local wine and music.
